ABOUT THE READ WITH ME CAMPAIGN

The Colorado Reading to Ensure Academic Development Act (Colorado READ Act) was passed by the Colorado legislature in 2012, giving the state the guiding philosophy, structure and resources to get children reading at grade level by the end of third grade.

While the READ Act has been effective in helping struggling students, there are still a high number of students not reading at grade level by the time they complete third grade.

The good news, however, is that there are things parents can do before their child enters school that will better prepare them for learning to read.

Thus, legislation was passed in 2019 to strengthen the law, requiring all K-3 teachers to have training on effective reading instruction. The updated law also requires a public awareness campaign that emphasizes the important role parents and caregivers play in helping children learn to read.
